My Favorite top 20 songs from Pre - 75. I won't mention versions of any song as that would of course skew this list up completely. But if I had to randomly pick a song pre '75 I would pick in this order

Darkstar
The Other One
Viola Lee Blues
Playin' In The Band
The Eleven
Eyes Of The World
Alligator
Turn On Your Lovelight
New Potato Caboose
Comes A Time
Spanish Jam
Morning Dew
MLB Jam
Weather Report Suite
Hard To Handle
Here Comes Sunshine
St. Stephen
Bertha
Wharf Rat
Brokedown Palace

What did I miss?

i think any top 10/20 list you put together of songs from only the pre-retirement era would be difficult indeed; for example, even a quick glance at your list i note that Caution is not included, or Doin' That Rag, two songs i most definitely would have included (as well as New Speedway Boogie that DeadRed71 lists); and yet, the kicker is, what from your list would you (or i) remove (other than Bertha, which while it's a song i enjoy, i'm not sure i'd include it in any top whatever list); an enjoyable dilemma indeed

I most certainly overlooked Caution. I compiled this list in about 10 minutes off the top of my head. Next time I'll do less with the "ADD thinking" and more with an eye toward a structured based decision. But as you elude... a top 20 is about nearly impossible. I started with just wanting a top 10 and knew that was senseless.

As a "favs" list, it is of course more personal.

My quibbles would be moving StSt much further up--it'd be top of mine.

And, I'd include MotMoon.

Somethin like this:

MotM--DD--StSt--Eleven--DDHNM (one song, right?)
Ce--Oo--Ce--NPC (ditto?)
GRd
AmBeauty (cheating?...har)
Workman (might as well continue)
Bertha
GSET

There, that would hold me for a while...

No Ripple?
No Jackstraw?
No UJB?
No New Speedway, or Deal, or Loser, or Sugaree, or Ramble on Rose, or Cumberland Blues, or BIODTL, or Greatest Story, or Stella Blue, or US Blues, or OMSN, or China/Rider, or Box of Rain, or Mr. Charlie, or for the love of God, Sugar Magnolia?

As you can see most of my favs include room for improv, not all, but most. UJB (for Improv), Stella, China>Rider deserve a spot. But what songs lose the status of "top 20"? Dialemas abound! All of what you mention are indeed great songs!
